From the beginning of 2021 till the end of October 2025, a total of 31,654 people acquired a driving licence to legally drive a car. From this total, 17,079 (just under 54%) were Maltese citizens.

Following a parliamentary question asked by PN MP Bernice Bonello on Monday, Transport Minister Chris Bonett revealed how many people acquired a driving license since the start of 2021 and the end of this past October. He also shared these figures by driving license category (A, B, C, D) and how many people from these totals were Maltese citizens.

In 2021, 7,634 people attained a standard category B driving licence - 4,975 were Maltese. In 2022, just 6,067 people attained a car driving licence and from these, 3,541 people (58%) were Maltese. In 2023, 3,132 Maltese out of 6,340 new drivers earned this licence to drive, which amounts to 49% of new drivers. Last year, Maltese new drivers represented 2,892 of the 6,527 new drivers on the roads, i.e., 44%. In the first ten months of 2025, 5,086 people acquired this driving licence, of which 2,539 were Maltese (just shy of 50%).

For new motorcyclists, i.e., those who attained a category A driving licence, the country saw an additional 4,054 during this timeframe. 2,466 of these were Maltese (nearly 61%).

Category C driving licences are reserved for large goods vehicles, such as trucks and vans, while category D licences are for passenger vans and coaches. 3,481 attained a category C licence since the beginning of 2021; of these, 1,845 were Maltese. For Category D, there were 325 new such licensed drivers in 2021 (108 Maltese), 196 in 2022 (69 Maltese), 429 in 2023 (103 Maltese), 614 last year (80 Maltese), and 355 (49 Maltese) in 2025 so far.
