An 18-year-old man is facing potential jail time after pleading guilty to a series of offences involving his former girlfriend, including unlawfully accessing her online accounts and possessing or sharing intimate images without her consent.

The couple had been together for four years before breaking up in March, after which the woman moved abroad to pursue her studies. Despite the separation, they remained in periodic contact, and the accused visited her twice-once in October during difficulties she was having with her family, and again between November 5 and 14, accompanied by her family. During the second visit, the woman discovered that the accused had been messaging other women, despite her efforts to repair their relationship.

Later, she realised that the man had gained access to her Facebook, Instagram, and Gmail accounts and changed the passwords, effectively locking her out. When she attempted to file a police report remotely, the confirmation email was rejected-presumed in court to have been blocked by the accused, who still had control of her Gmail account.

She returned to Malta and filed the report in person. The man admitted to accessing and taking control of her accounts without permission and obstructing her from regaining access. He also admitted to taking or disclosing private sexual photos of her without consent and causing her to fear he might harm her. Additional charges included harassment, threats, and insults.

In court, the prosecution and defence conferred privately before the accused confirmed a guilty plea. The court noted there was an understanding involving a probation order, community service, and a restraining order, though the charges carry possible jail time.

The court granted bail under a €2,000 personal guarantee, a weekly signature requirement, and a curfew. A protection order was issued for the victim. Sentencing is expected later this month.
