Snow White, the Prince and the Fairy are three of the most recognisable characters in the fairytale canon - yet, with a touch of panto sparkle, they spring to life in newly spectacular ways.

Stepping into that spotlight are Melissa Mercieca, Ali Kanay Demirci and Carla Fenech: three performers starring in MADC's Snow White, which soon brings panto joy back to Teatru Salesjan following last year's acclaimed Ebenezer Scrooge! The Panto.

Performing alongside Alan Montanaro, Sarah Jane Zrinzo, Noel Zarb, Karl Bartolo, Bertha Farrugia, Joe Depasquale and a brilliant ensemble, they are ready to add their names to the decades-long legacy of one of Malta's favourite festive traditions.

For Melissa, playing Snow White has meant looking past the familiar storybook image and finding the young woman beneath. "Behind all the fun panto shenanigans, the rehearsal process has taught me how to discover the real person underneath," she says. "Snow White is a timeless character and such a gentle soul, who genuinely believes that true love exists and there is good inside everyone. It's so rewarding to play that childlike sense of wonder."

Working closely with panto veterans such as director Stephen Oliver and writer Alan Montanaro - who is also back in heels as Dame - has also uncovered performance magic. "They've encouraged me not to be afraid of trying something different," she explains. "Having the freedom to experiment in rehearsals is such a simple thing, but it's essential to make a panto truly sparkle."

Opposite her, Ali Kanay Demirci is crafting his own take on the Prince. "The script offers the freedom to explore the Prince's depth and find an interpretation that feels fresh, while staying true to the character," he says, adding that joining the cast has been a milestone unto itself. "It means a lot to be part of such a beloved festive tradition and it's an absolute privilege to be performing with such a talented cast, a hardworking crew and an incredible company."

Carla Fenech, who plays the Fairy, brings a different kind of magic to the stage - and much like her character, she finds rehearsals most fun when she gets to stir up a little trouble alongside a local panto legend. "My favourite moments in rehearsals are any time I get to pick on Alan Montanaro," she laughs. "Fairy Powderpuff is not your typical 'airy fairy'. She's quite sassy and teases the Dame from beginning to end. It's great fun for me - but not so much for him! But getting to share a panto stage with Alan is a memory I'll cherish."

Above all, she hopes MADC's Snow White gives audiences the ultimate Christmas gift - a good laugh together with family and friends in the joyful world of panto. "We want to make the audience laugh until they're in stitches, then leave the theatre with a smile on their faces. That's what panto is all about!"

MADC's Snow White performs in English at Teatru Salesjan, Sliema, from 23 December 2025 to 5 January 2026, with both matinee and evening performances available.
