Nationalist Party does not respect its own statute, PL says; PN responds

Thursday, 11 December 2025, 17:50 Last update: about 8 months ago

The Nationalist Party is now even discarding and acting in breach of its own statute, the Labour Party said in a statement.

"This has become evident, following questions from the media, that the President of the Nationalist Party's Administrative Council, Graham Bencini, does not know who the auditor responsible for auditing the PN's financial accounts is, despite the fact that he is the person with the statutory responsibility to appoint said auditor."

"In fact, this emerges clearly from paragraph 71(g) of the Nationalist Party's statute, which specifically states that 'the Administrative Council shall also appoint an External Auditor holding a warrant issued under the Accountancy Profession Act to verify the party's accounts'," the PL said.

"The Nationalist Party's financial situation continues to expose the true colours of the PN leadership. How can the public have any peace of mind that a Nationalist Party in government would keep its promises, when it cannot even respect its own councillors within the General Council and abide by its own statute and internal structures?"

The Labour Party should stop deceiving the Maltese and Gozitan people - PN

In response, the PN said that "The Labour Party's state of panic at the credibility of the Leader of the Nationalist Party Alex Borg - who is keeping his word, including on the PN's accounts - is no excuse for Labour to continue fabricating and spreading falsehoods."

"As Alex Borg pledged during the leadership campaign, the PN will be submitting its accounts within the first 100 days of his tenure as Leader of the PN."

"After spending the past three months casting doubt on this commitment, Labour has now invented a new lie simply because they realised they were about to be exposed as scaremongers. Unlike the Labour Party, the PN always adheres to its own statute - and this is what it did also in the case of its audited accounts."

The PN called on the Labour Party and Prime Minister Robert Abela "to stop wasting their time concocting new fabrications about the PN, and instead focus on addressing the real problems facing Maltese and Gozitan families."

"Furthermore, it is time for Robert Abela and the Labour Party to clarify when they intend to publish the spending report for Robert Abela's own leadership campaign. Nearly six years have passed, and the public is still waiting for answers."
