'Il-Karikatura tal-mument'

Informa has launched its first book, titled Il-Karikatura tal-mument. The publication primarily consists of 24 cartoons that chronicle the political journey leading up to the 2024 European Parliament and Local Council elections.

The book is authored by the director of Informa, James Aaron Ellul, with illustrations by cartoonist and artist Mark Schembri. This publication represents a first of its kind, marking the birth of a new strand within the many functions fulfilled by Informa as a research and studies centre.

During the period covered, Malta witnessed a number of political developments that left a clear mark on the country's political landscape and, above all, on the quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan people. As explained in a text included in the book, this publication is described as: "A space where absurdity becomes poetry, where criticism turns into colour... Those who delve into these pages will find a world that is at once familiar and alien: a blurred beauty, seriousness fractured by small details."

Each published cartoon is accompanied by a description explaining the context that gave rise to it, the thought process and reflection of that particular moment, whether already lived or still unfolding. Some scandals have since faded from memory, often deliberately forgotten by those with reasons to do so, while others have grown far beyond the original cartoon that once appeared in the newspaper, il-mument.

The book also provides insight into the imagery used in each cartoon, explaining why and how it was created. The cartoons feature metaphors and sayings brought vividly to life, as well as fictional characters specifically created to strengthen the message being conveyed. One particularly popular character is San Klaċċubrejk, the patron saint of those stuck in traffic. Through such characters and symbols, the cartoons deliver messages that are both accessible and thought-provoking. Alongside this character, several others appear throughout the book.
