Final preparations are underway at the Kirkop Sports Complex ahead of another edition of the national fundraising marathon L-Istrina, which will be held on Boxing Day in support of the Malta Community Chest Fund.
On Tuesday morning, the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, visited the complex, where she observed the ongoing work and met employees from the Office of the President, the Malta Community Chest Fund, and representatives of private companies who have volunteered their assistance with the setting up and preparation of the venue.
As in previous years, L-Istrina will officially open at noon, inaugurated by the President of Malta, accompanied by Prime Minister Robert Abela, Opposition Leader Alex Borg, and the Archbishop of Malta, Monsignor Charles J. Scicluna.
The live broadcast will continue until midnight across all major television stations. Throughout the day, entertainment will be provided by bands from various musical societies coordinated by the National Band Clubs Association, alongside activities led by television personalities and interviews with individuals who have benefited from assistance provided by the Malta Community Chest Fund.
During the day, Spiteri Debono will also participate in the fundraising efforts as required, while volunteers will handle calls from members of the public. Individuals and companies that have raised funds privately or through organised activities during the year will have the opportunity to present their donations and cheques.
The President is also scheduled to visit Gozo at around 3.30pm to receive donations from Gozitan individuals and companies. This year, unlike previous editions, the Gozo celebration of L-Istrina will take place at the "Bethlehem" entrance in Għajnsielem, a traditional event also being held in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.
Once again, a number of hairdressers are offering their services free of charge and will be present at the Kirkop Sports Complex to cut hair donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund. The donated hair is used to make wigs for individuals who lose their hair due to cancer treatment or other medical conditions. Between four and six hair donations are required to produce a single wig.
Hair donations must be at least 30 centimetres long and free from chemical treatment. Those wishing to donate hair are asked to make an appointment by calling 7969 0754 or 2169 0754.
Donation lines are already open, with €25 donations available by calling 5180 2012, €50 by calling 5190 2030, or by sending an SMS donation of €11.65 to 5061 9201. Donations of any amount may also be made through the BOVMobile or MyAPS apps using the number 7935 9565.
On the day of L-Istrina, the pledge line will also be open on 2126 2626, allowing callers to register a donation, which will then be collected by volunteers from the Malta Community Chest Fund during the day.
