The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, issued her New Year’s message to European Union citizens on 30 December 2025.
In her New Year’s message, the EP President declared what the European Parliament will look to push this coming year for the continent. Metsola said that with the New Year comes “fresh determination to build a Europe that builds up to its promise.”
In her video message, Metsola listed several points through which she and the rest of the European Parliament envision for the European Union to continue promoting in the near future.
Metsola referenced European values as things to be proud of and stick by, acknowledging “the guiding light they provide.”
She called for European countries to continue working closely together, stating that the European Parliament wants to have “a Europe where we understand that we can only deliver when we act together.” She added that in doing so, the EU must be unapologetic, agile, adaptive, and able to shape the world we live in.
Metsola also called for “a Europe that looks forward with hope, [and] not back with false nostalgia.”
After calling for “a Europe that makes it easier for us all” in the sense that the EU overcomes bureaucracy and invites Europeans with more space to grow, compete and prosper, the EP President called for the continent to continue offering its solidarity to neighbouring countries in crisis, as well as for those who sustain European communities from within. Precisely, she noted that “Europe is personified by our firefighters and emergency workers who crossed borders to rush into the flames and help neighbouring countries.”
Metsola spoke of her vision for younger and older generations across the European Union Member States – for the EU to be “fairer” to younger generations while supporting the elderly “who raised, taught, and guided us.”
In this message, Metsola implied bolstering EU defences as she spoke of having a European continent “that makes it safer for our people,” “takes responsibility for its own security,” and one that people can rely on to guarantee peace of mind.
On behalf of the European Parliament, Metsola stated that in its vision for the EU, the EP would like Europe to be a place where affordable homes and quality jobs are foundations people can rely on, and “where we double down on the need for real equality of opportunity.”
Metsola concluded her New Year’s message by calling for the EU to be “larger, reformed, and faster” while opening its doors “to those ready to join our Union.” She followed this by remarking that the EU should look to continue building solid partnerships with allies all across the globe.
“In the European Parliament, that’s the European Union my colleagues and I will keep pushing to bring closer every single day. That’s the path we will walk down together this year. Happy New Year everyone, here’s to 2026,” Metsola said.
