Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri revealed in Parliament on Wednesday that in 2025, a grand total of 2,174 domestic violence cases were reported to authorities in the Maltese islands.
Answering a question by PN MP Jerome Caruana Cilia, Camilleri provided a full list that broke down the number of domestic violence reports filed per locality across Malta and Gozo.
Malta's most populous locality, St Paul's Bay, registered the most domestic violence reports last year with a total of 145 reports, almost three per week. The only other locality to accumulate at least 100 domestic violence reports in 2025 was Mosta, with 106. Rounding up the top five for the highest incidence of domestic violence reports last year were Birkirkara with 87 such reports, Marsaskala with 82 reports, and Qormi with 81.
In contrast, there were three localities that registered zero domestic violence reports throughout 2025: Fontana (Gozo), Kerċem (Gozo), and Mdina. San Lawrenz had only one report.
From this shared data, seven reports were marked as miscellaneous (N/A), with no listed locality.
This total of 2,174 reports is just 51 fewer than the reported total for 2024 that Minister Camilleri had disclosed in May 2025 - also upon the request of Opposition MP Caruana Cilia. The Minister for the Interior, at the time, had shared that in 2024, police had received 2,225 reports of domestic violence, amounting to six every day.
According to this data, 2025 marked a 2% decrease in domestic violence cases reported. 2024 had marked a 7% increase from 2023 (2,071 total cases).
Responding to this PQ on Wednesday, Minister Camilleri noted that "domestic violence is a scourge in society that we must continue to fight every day as a society all together. That is why there are ongoing initiatives from different entities within the Government."
"What is certain is that we must continue raising awareness and foster an environment where one does not hesitate to come forward and report," the Minister said.
Among the initiatives undertaken to combat domestic violence around the country are panic alarms, bolstering the services provided by the Victim Support Agency, dedicated hubs (one in Santa Luċija and another in Gozo), and a specialised Gender Based and Domestic Violence squad within the police.
The Minister added that another dedicated hub is set to open in Mtarfa "in the coming days."
