A €680,000 expenditure is being made to upgrade 11 social housing blocks in Marsa, with works expected to benefit 57 families through improved building façades, roofing and common areas, a government statement said.

Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue and Accommodation Andy Ellul visited ongoing improvement and beautification works in a social housing area in Marsa on Wednesday.

The project, located in the Marija Reġina area, is being carried out with a total expenditure of around €680,000 and involves improvement works on 11 residential blocks, which will benefit a total of 57 families.

The project includes maintenance of building façades as well as works and improvements to the roofs, the statement read.

A waterproofing system has been installed on the roofs to prevent damage and ensure that the buildings remain safe, and maintenance works are also being carried out in the common areas of each block.

Ellul said that these projects do not only represent infrastructural improvements, but also translate into a better quality of life for hundreds of residents, as well as a more pleasant and cleaner environment.

"These projects are providing dignity and a more beautiful environment for all those living in various areas across Malta. I truly enjoyed seeing residents express their satisfaction with the work being carried out and the manner in which it is being done," Ellul said.

The statement said that in 2025, similar works were carried out on 79 apartment blocks, 48 of which formed part of last year's programme and 31 which continued from 2024.

Together, these projects amounted to an expenditure of around €4.3 million.

In 2026, the Housing Authority will complete works on 62 blocks with an expenditure of €3.6 million, it said.

In addition, improvement and beautification works will also be carried out on 15 blocks in the Ċawla area in Rabat, Gozo, with an expenditure of nearly €800,000.

"I look forward to the coming weeks and months, during which we will begin improvement works on the buildings and environments where hundreds of families live. In fact, from all the projects to be carried out this year, a total of 530 families in nine localities, both in Malta and Gozo, will benefit," Ellul said.

In addition to the projects in Marsa and Ċawla in Gozo, improvement, maintenance and beautification projects will also be carried out in Paola, Marsaskala, Santa Luċija, Attard, Kalkara, Luqa and Gżira.
