Lead poisoning kills around one million birds every year across Europe and continues to pose serious risks to human health, BirdLife Malta has warned, as it made a final push for public support ahead of the closure of an EU-level petition calling for a comprehensive ban on lead in ammunition and fishing weights.

In a Facebook post, the environmental NGO said that time is running out and urged the public to sign a petition calling for a ban on lead in ammunition and fishing weights, warning that every year, 1 million birds die from lead poisoning in Europe, with 135 million more at risk.

BirdLife said that lead contaminates nature and threatens human health as well, especially children, adding that there is no safe level of exposure, and this harm is 100% preventable.

The organisation said that in 2025, the European Commission proposed a ban on lead in ammunition and fishing weights, but warned that loopholes and delays could still allow this toxic pollution to continue for years.

It said that a solution exists, noting that safe, lead-free alternatives are already available, but added that what is missing is the political will to act faster and stronger.

"That's why your voice matters now," BirdLife said, adding that the petition closes on 31 January, describing it as "the final push" to demand a ban that truly protects people, wildlife, and the environment.

"Every signature counts. Yours can make the difference," the NGO said.
