During 2025, the Foundation for Tomorrow's Schools (FTS) carried out a number of enhancement projects in recreational spaces across several schools. These projects included environmental maintenance as well as the installation of new artificial turf.

The total investment amounted to approximately €1,341,535. The two largest projects were the upgrading of seven grounds at the Gozo College Primary and Middle Schools, with an investment of nearly €800,000, and works at St George Preca College Secondary School (Lyceum) in Ħamrun, valued at over €200,000. In both cases, existing grounds were resurfaced with artificial turf.

During the inauguration of the Ħamrun Lyceum ground, the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, highlighted the importance being given to schools across the country, not only through infrastructural works but also through the improvement of sports and recreational spaces.

"We are placing strong importance on the wellbeing of our students, as outlined in the National Education Strategy 2024-2030. Alongside the work being carried out at a national level in the sports sector, we are also ensuring that schools and educational institutions provide more suitable environments for sports and recreation," said Minister Grima. "We are continuing to work on programmes and initiatives that give greater importance to sport and physical activity, while these projects also ensure better spaces for our students."

Over the past year, in addition to the two main projects mentioned, investment was also made in recreational and physical activity spaces at several other schools. These included St George Preca College Primary School in Ħamrun and Valletta, Santa Clara College Primary Schools in Pembroke and St Julian's, St Ignatius College Primary School in Żebbuġ, and St Thomas More College Primary School in Żejtun.

"We are ensuring that open spaces are suitable so that students have better areas in which to practise sport and engage in physical exercise. Through this investment, we are not only improving the physical environment for recreation and activity, but also placing importance on the mental and social wellbeing of our students," concluded Minister Clifton Grima.
