The Prime Minister's confirmation that illegal structures damaged by Storm Harry will be subsidised through public funds is deeply irresponsible and fundamentally unjust, ADPD-The Green Party said Wednesday.

This decision further confirms Prime Minister Robert Abela's total disregard for the tenets of good governance and fairness. Robert Abela chooses to reward years of abuse and sends a clear message that those who break planning regulations can ultimately rely on taxpayers to absorb the consequences, it added. It is a repeat of the amnesties on planning regulation breaches dished out over the years. This time under the guise of 'helping' people.

The environmental implications are equally alarming. Illegal construction has contributed to environmental degradation and increased vulnerability to extreme weather. Lack of proper planning and investment in climate mitigation infrastructure is also a huge issue. Subsidising the damage to illegal structures encourages further reckless development and normalises illegality, ADPD said.

ADPD-The Green Party Chairperson Sandra Gauci said: "Where are government plans to mitigate the effects of climate change? What are government estimates of long term spending necessary to mitigate these effects? Robert Abela chooses illegality instead of proper planning."
