Oliwia Wojnowska, the 13-year-old Polish girl who died after being swept into the sea at Ċirkewwa, has been laid to rest.

According to Polish news outlet Super Express, large crowds gathered to pay their final respects at her funeral.

Oliwia lost her life in January after a powerful wave swept her into the sea at Ċirkewwa. Her body was found following a multi-day search operation.

The teenager had been on holiday in Malta with her family. At the time of the incident, she was standing on the pavement behind railings near the south quay area, watching the rough seas, when a sudden wave struck.

The force of the wave pinned her 49-year-old father and her 17-year-old brother against a wall, while Oliwia was dragged into the water. Her father was injured while attempting to rescue her and was later treated at Mater Dei Hospital.

Oliwia's death has deeply affected her hometown in Poland. Local media reported that the John Paul II Primary School in Łazy, along with the mayor of the Lesznowola commune, expressed their profound condolences to the family, describing the tragedy as an immense loss and a difficult period of mourning for the entire school community.
