Maltese endurance runner Zach Vella is set to undertake a 2,600+ kilometre run from London to Malta, crossing France, Switzerland and Italy in support of YMCA Malta's efforts to strengthen and expand its Drop-In Centre and shelter services.
The challenge, titled Miles from Home, will see Vella complete the equivalent of more than 45 consecutive ultra marathons, averaging around 60 kilometres a day for over six weeks. The cross-continental journey will test sustained physical and mental endurance across varied terrain, including long rural stretches and mountainous sections through Switzerland.
The run will begin on March 22nd in London with a symbolic departure from the Mahatma Gandhi Hall at the Indian YMCA, followed by a tribute stop at St Paul's Cathedral, the resting place of YMCA founder Sir George Williams. From there, Vella will continue south through France, across the Alps into Switzerland, down through Italy and onwards to Sicily, before completing the final leg to Malta.
Unlike single-day endurance events, the challenge will require consistent ultra-distance performance with limited recovery time, day after day, over thousands of kilometres and multiple countries.
Vella said the journey is rooted in a belief in dignity and opportunity for all.
"I firmly believe that shelter is a human right and the foundation of life and wellbeing. All people should have the opportunity to dream and follow their path," he said.
The run is being organised in support of YMCA Malta, which is seeking to expand and improve its Drop-In Centre, Ċentru Albert Degiorgio and shelter services in response to growing demand for services among individuals experiencing homelessness and vulnerability.
Anthony Camilleri, CEO of YMCA Malta, said the scale of the challenge reflects the seriousness of the cause.
"This is an extraordinary physical undertaking that symbolises the long and often difficult journey many people face when trying to rebuild their lives. Zach's commitment is helping shine a light on the need to strengthen the support systems that so many depend on," he said.
Throughout the route, Vella will be supported by YMCA networks across Europe, highlighting the international reach of the movement and the shared commitment to social justice across borders.
His arrival in Malta will coincide with the YMCA Europe General Assembly, where more than 120 delegates and leaders from across the continent will be gathered on the island.
YMCA Malta is inviting the public, corporate partners and communities to follow the journey and support the initiative. Each kilometre completed and each donation received will contribute to the effort to enhance facilities and services for those who rely on the Drop-In Centre and shelter services.
