The PN is calling on Government to take the education of our children more seriously and to invest public funds so that educational buildings "are properly maintained, rather than being left in a state of neglect that can endanger the safety of our students and educators."

"Following several Parliamentary Questions raised by the Opposition in recent months regarding the lack of investment in the Malta Visual and Performing Arts School in Ħamrun, which also includes the School of Music, today the media reported an incident that could have had far more serious consequences."

The PN asks whether Government is waiting for a student or educator to be seriously injured before doing what it is duty-bound to do and ensuring that this school is fit for learning.

According to a report by Newsbook, some "students were struck by falling debris during a dancing class at Malta's Visual and Performing Arts School (MVPA)".

"Ironically, just a few days ago, during a political activity, the Prime Minister had in front of him a child from this very school who criticised the lack of resources at the school. The Prime Minister, however, chose to completely ignore this student's concerns, disregarded the question and immediately moved on to another one."

"This precisely reflects the Government's attitude towards art and culture and towards investment in art schools. The Opposition has long been criticising the Labour Government for the lack of investment in these schools. This is a Government which, when it comes to art, culture and education in these fields, has buried its head in the sand," the PN said.

"This school, which is specifically dedicated to the performing arts, had already been left without a hall because the school hall's ceiling has been condemned. Students were rehearsing by using another hall which is also used by other entities. It now appears that this too is not in a suitable condition to be used by students. This means that the performing arts school has been left without a theatre where its students can perform."

The PN said that it expects Government to respond about what happened today at this school, and to immediately ensure that this school is not only a safe place for students and educators, but that the necessary investment is made so that students - like the one who expressed his disappointment to the Prime Minister - have at least the basic resources one would expect to find in such schools.
