Twenty-four new correctional officers have officially begun their careers with the Correctional Services Agency following the completion of weeks of intensive training and a Passing Out Parade marking the end of their recruitment programme.

Addressing the new officers, Byron Camilleri, Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, underlined that discipline and respect must form the foundation of their work. He stressed the weight of responsibility carried by correctional officers, noting that they are accountable not only for their own actions but also for upholding the integrity and reputation of the entire institution.

The Minister highlighted the rehabilitative role of the correctional system, explaining that while maintaining order within facilities is essential, this must be complemented by sustained efforts to support the reintegration of residents into society and to prevent the creation of new victims. He also reassured recruits of the government's continued commitment to supporting them throughout their careers, referencing recent improvements in working conditions, better salaries, expanded professional development opportunities, and investment in infrastructure and resources.

The cohort consists of 19 men and five women who were selected after a rigorous, multi-stage recruitment process designed to identify candidates with the highest levels of suitability for the role. Their training followed a holistic curriculum covering correctional systems, the duties of a correctional officer, psychology, physical training, and other key areas intended to prepare them for both operational and rehabilitative responsibilities.

Chief Executive Officer Christopher Siegersma said the Passing Out Parade represents more than a ceremonial conclusion, describing it as the start of a demanding professional journey and a commitment to a vocation that is complex, challenging, and fundamentally human.
