A Sudanese man has been jailed for two years after he admitted to trafficking drugs on Wednesday.

Police said in a statement that the 24-year-old man who lives in Birżebbuġa, was charged before Magistrate Monica Vella earlier in the day.

He faced several charges related to drug trafficking after he was arrested in Ħamrun on Tuesday afternoon at around 5pm.

The man was observed leaving an establishment in Triq San Vinċenz and arrested soon after.

When he was searched, police found just shy of €3,000 in cash on his person, and a search in his residence resulted in a large plastic bag filled with 80 grams of synthetic drugs, nine packets of cannabis, two blocks of cannabis resin weighing 83 grams, and a significant number of small plastic bags ready to be used for trafficking.

Magistrate Franco Agius also led an inquiry into the case.

The man pleaded guilty to the charges against him and was handed an effective jail sentence of two years and a €1,500 fine.
