President of Malta Myriam Spiteri Debono paid a visit to the Correctional Facility at Kordin, where she was given an overview of the services and programmes aimed at supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of residents, a statement issued by her office said Friday.

She was accompanied during the visit by Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment Byron Camilleri, Correctional Services Agency CEO Christopher Siegersma, Chief Operations Officer Colonel Etienne Scicluna, and Permanent Secretary Joyce Dimech.

At the President's request, the visit focused on the various services and facilities specifically intended to help residents rebuild their lives and prepare for life outside prison. Residents are offered opportunities to learn trades and continue their academic studies as part of the facility's rehabilitation efforts.

During the visit, President Spiteri Debono toured the educational hub, where learning and educational services are provided, as well as the clinic and the chapel.

She also visited the kitchen and bakery, where residents, together with trained staff, prepare daily meals for the entire facility while at the same time receiving practical training in culinary skills.

At the carpentry workshops, the President saw residents learning their trade while working on furniture that will be used to furnish apartments being built by Puttinu Cares in London.

The President also met and spoke personally with a number of inmates at different stages of their sentences, including prisoners serving time for different offences as well as some who are still awaiting sentencing.

She also held a meeting with the leadership of the Correctional Services Agency.

Accompanying the President on the visit were Secretary to the Presidency Moira Attard and Head of Secretariat at the Office of the President Reuben Sciberras.
