Prime Minister Robert Abela has urged the EU to take timely action to tackle inflation, especially in the energy sector. This comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East affecting prices.

Abela signals that Malta will continue absorbing energy costs rather than passing them to consumers. He emphasises that countries like Malta face disproportionate energy costs due to import dependency and transport and logistics costs. Because of this, Abela calls for short-term support measures, long-term reforms, and investment in green and digital transition.

Abela also made reference to the coordinated letter with southern EU states about the Arctic Metagaz, highlighting maritime safety and environmental damage in the Mediterranean.

Abela says he is pushing for de-escalation in the Middle East and a stronger EU diplomatic role. Moreover, he reaffirmed support for international law and multilateralism, alongside UN secretary-general António Guterres.

Abela also warns of potential migration pressures due to regional instability. He thus emphasises effective returns and cooperation with origin and transit countries.

"We must be supportive of our families and businesses," Abela said. "We must find ways to offer stability and withstand external shocks."
