Joyce Camilleri's solo show Materia Prima opened at Jo Borg Gallery in Sliema on Saturday 14 March 2026. The opening event was inaugurated by Hon Dr Owen Bonnici as part of the programme of satellite events of the Malta Biennale 2026.

Joyce Camilleri's ongoing artistic practice explores the concept of Materia Prima, embodying the intricate network of relationships fundamental to artistic creation. As Ewa Lajer-Burcharth and Isabelle Graw (2016) observe, "If there is, at this juncture, a renewed concern with the idea of the medium, it is due to the rising interest in making and materiality that, in turn, stems from the recognition of the material and the technical register of the work of art as the very site rather than a mere support of meaning." Camilleri's practice exemplifies this contemporary understanding, approaching painting as a dynamic process of gradual discovery - a deliberate methodology that articulates the evolving dialogue between artist and reality.

This interpretative framework is reflected in the very structure of her works, which offer multiple perceptual entry points without confining viewers to a singular interpretation. Materia Prima introduces the public to a body of works on panel and paper produced between 2021 and 2026, accompanied by a curatorial text by Italian curator Roberta Bertozzi, translated into the English language by Elizabeth Grech alongside a poem by the latter local writer based in Italy.
