Prime Minister Robert Abela on Wednesday outlined a series of major proposals aimed at improving infrastructure, education, and connectivity in Gozo.

Speaking in Sannat during the PL's first activity on the sister island, Abela pledged the completion of the government's ambitious roadmap to upgrade residential roads.

Abela stated that within the next three years, the government intends to complete a programme of 100 new residential streets in Gozo. He noted that progress is already underway, with 13 roads either completed or in advanced stages within just a few months.

The Prime Minister also announced plans for a new submarine electricity cable between Malta and Gozo. Describing it as a 132kV interconnector, Abela said the project is expected to cost €45 million. The investment is aimed at strengthening energy resilience and ensuring a more stable supply between the two islands.

Education infrastructure also features prominently in the Labour Party's proposals for the 2026 election. Abela pledged that all schools in Gozo will be modernised within the next five years, with the goal of providing students with high-quality learning environments and modern facilities.

In addition, the government plans a significant investment in the Gozo Channel. A total of €130 million is earmarked over the next three years to expand the Gozo Channel fleet to five vessels by 2029. The move is intended to improve connectivity and reduce waiting times for commuters and visitors traveling between Malta and Gozo, Abela said.

Abela announced that in total, the Labour Party's electoral manifesto will include 100 proposals for Gozo. The Prime Minister said the proposals build on the Labour Government's work in recent years, which has focused on direct engagement with the public. He added that the 100 proposals for Gozo are shaped by listening to people and responding to their needs.

During the interview, he also reaffirmed several other commitments for Gozo, including plans to make ferry travel free for passengers traveling on foot, about which Abela had spoken also in the morning event.

He also made reference to multiple proposals that have already been announced since the election campaign started. These include a further 15% increase in student stipends, a grant of €1,000 for students who pursue educational experiences abroad, and the doubling of the carers' grant to become equivalent to minimum wage
