Momentum on Saturday highligjted what it said was an application a permit to encroach on public land in Sliema and reclaim sea in order to construct a lido including outdoor swimming pool, sun deck, two buildings to accommodate ancillary facilities to pool, restaurants (Class 4D), as well as a play area.
Prof. Pierre Schembri wismayer, Momentum candidate on the 7th and 10th district , stated: "The rape of Sliema continues, Not content with having already destroyed the peculiar characteristics of Sliema, greedy developers want to continue in the footsteps of their predecessors and deprive the Sliema residents and Maltese citizens in general of the public land which we all own. The Sliema and Gzira residents are being made to feel prisoners in their own homes".
Prof. Arnold Cassola, Momentum leader and candidate on the 9th and 10th districts, stated: "This proposal is scandalous, even more so if the company proposing it has close relations to an MP. We at Momentum say it clearly in our Manifesto soon to be fully published...No public land or sea is ever to be given away or sold for private commercial profit. Our sea and coastline are "Taghna Lkoll" and the Maltese people should not be deprived of their natural heritage to facilitate fast profit for a few individuals".
