In a significant turnaround from the previous election, ten women won 12 out of 67 parliamentary seats during the initial count. This result more than doubles the tally from the early stages of the 2022 election, which marked a 20-year low when only four women made it to parliament before casual elections and the gender corrective mechanism eventually brought the final number to 22 female MPs.

The latest results show a stronger performance for women running on both major party tickets. Five women were elected for the Labour Party, including returning MPs Miriam Dalli, Julia Farrugia, and Alison Zerafa Civelli. Rosianne Cutajar, who previously entered parliament through a casual election, won a seat directly this time, while Alicia Bugeja Said secured her seat on her own steam after previously entering via the gender quota mechanism.

The Nationalist Party elected four women directly. Graziella Galea, the only woman directly elected on the PN ticket four years ago, returns to the benches alongside Paula Mifsud Bonnici and Rebekah Borg, both of whom previously won seats via casual elections. Borg put forward a particularly strong showing by winning seats in two districts. Eve Borg Bonello also secured a direct seat after previously relying on the gender quota, while Janice Abela Chetcuti was elected through the proportionality mechanism.

Ultimately, five out of the 13 female candidates fielded by the PN won direct seats, compared to five out of 28 for Labour. The current group of ten elected women is expected to grow as casual elections take place and the gender corrective mechanism is applied later in the process.
