Sixty-seven MPs were elected on Sunday, with several who served in the last legislature not making the cut.

Here are the names who have not been re-elected directly by the people and who are now hoping to be re-elected through the casual elections to take place over the coming fortnight or, for the women who missed out, through the gender quota mechanism afterwards.

This article will factor all parliamentarians from the fourteenth legislature (2022-2026), though excludes the politicians who did not seek re-election whatsoever.

From District 1, two Labour Party MPs will be hoping to make a return to the House of Representatives over the coming days. Cressida Galea and Davina Sammut Hili, who were both elected via the gender quota mechanism in 2022, were the two MPs to not be given a seat in Parliament by the electorate itself.

With Chris Agius opting to retire from politics after a long career as a public representative, Bernice Bonello was the only parliamentarian from the second district to not be given a seat on Sunday evening. Bonello, who once again contested on the PN ballot, was also elected through the gender quota mechanism in 2022 and has now been forced to hope to be assigned a seat through similar means this June.

Two candidates from the third district missed the cut in the Naxxar Counting Hall on Sunday: the PL's Ray Abela and Andy Ellul. Ellul is a particular shock of sorts having just been a member of Cabinet this past legislature, as the Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue. He was also assigned the housing portfolio just four months ago, in late January 2026, after Roderick Galdes resigned from his role as Housing Minister, though his official role was not formally upgraded to be recognised as a minister in his own right.

With men making up the great majority of MPs so far elected, Abela and Ellul will hope that casual elections within the Labour Party for relinquished seats up for grabs go their way.

Within District 3, PN's Janice Abela Chetcuti - who was also one of the 12 women to benefit from the gender quota mechanism in 2022 - did not manage to attain one of the district's five base seats, though she was re-elected on Sunday evening via the proportionality mechanism, which has been in place, through the Constitution of Malta, since 1987 to prevent a repeat of the 1981 general election result.

With the Nationalist Party closing the voter gap by just under 20,000 votes this time round, several Labour Party seats have been lost in Parliament's overall make-up for this legislature - even when you factor the gender quota into play. Over twice as many seats were allocated to women after Sunday's vote-counting, in comparison to 2022.

Resultantly, within District 4, two more Labour MPs find themselves on the fringes on not returning to the House of Representatives. These are Katya De Giovanni and Amanda Spiteri Grech. Both of these women were elected in the weeks after all votes were counted in 2022, with the former taking Chris Fearne's seat via casual election and the latter entering Parliament as another gender quota beneficiary.

The PN's Stanley Zammit is the sole person to fail to get elected on the fifth district after narrowly missing out by a couple hundred votes on Sunday. Like many on this list, he too was elected to the country's highest institution in the weeks after votes were counted - via casual election.

While no politicians were left pending from those last elected on District 6, three MPs missed out on District 7: PN's Charles Azzopardi and Ian Vassallo, as well as the PL's Naomi Cachia who just served the government as its Whip in the last term.

Julie Zahra, who was previously the only parliamentarian added onto District 8's seats via the gender quota mechanism, was not re-elected on Sunday.

The ninth district saw another pair of female politicians - one from each side - miss out for the time being: the PN's Graziella Attard Previ and the PL's Rebecca Buttigieg, who also just served as a Parliamentary Secretary this past legislature.

On District 10, the Nationalist Party's Graham Bencini and Albert Buttigieg missed the cut on Sunday. Bencini was elected via casual election in 2022 and Buttigieg replaced the late Robert Arrigo.

Within District 11, Labour politicians Romilda Zarb and Alex Muscat did not see re-election on Sunday. Muscat is also a former Parliamentary Secretary in his own right through his time during the thirteenth legislature, from January 2020 till March 2022. While Muscat was previously elected outright last election, Zarb had made it through the casual elections afterwards.

The 12th district saw four out of the six previously elected parliamentarians not contest in 2026. The remaining two, Ivan Castillo and Graziella Galea, retained their positions in Parliament.

In Gozo, the PL's Abigail Camilleri is the sole MP to not see immediate re-election on Sunday. She had benefitted from the gender quota mechanism in 2022.

In addition to this list of MPs, PL candidate Ramona Attard was not given a parliamentary seat on Sunday. Attard was co-opted into Parliament in January 2025, in place of ex-PL MP Randolph Debattista.
