A section of the cliffside at St. Peter's Pool in Delimara has been cordoned off by local police after significant fissures in the cliffside raised alarm bells that it may soon collapse.
Barriers were quickly set up on Wednesday after images shared on social media raised concern that this side of the touristic hotspot could soon result in tragedy without quick intervention from local authorities.
Deep cracks look to have formed around the edge of a cliff face in the area, over years of natural erosion, in a manner that points to a pending significant rock collapse.
Marsaxlokk mayor Steven Grech informed Times of Malta that he had filed a police report about this structural crack following several calls from worried locals. Following this, police closed off this section of the area to stop any passersby from endangering themselves.
Just earlier on Wednesday morning, tourists were spotted using the very cliff face as a place for shade to avoid the strong heat currently weighing over the Maltese islands.
Given the extent of this visible fissure, onlookers couldn't be blamed for thinking that this structure could cave in over the coming summer months - when St. Peter's Pool is at its busiest.
Mayor Grech had clarified that local authorities are playing this situation safe and will not risk any human lives amidst this visible geological fissure. He added that parts of the same cliff face had collapsed just last month.
A significant rock collapse was observed in late March last year.
It is hoped that no people are in harm's way once this structure imminently gives in and falls.
On 19 July 2024, 22-year-old Mirabelle Falzon tragically lost her life in a rockfall in Riħama Battery, St. Thomas' Bay, Marsascala.
Last summer, Falzon's parents pleaded that urgent action is taken to prevent any similar tragedies from repeating themselves. Their lawyer, the recently elected PN MP Conrad Borg Manché, had stated that her death could have been avoided had authorities acted on the repeated warnings it received about the site.
