The Nationalist Party's Executive Committee has approved the process through which, as provided for in the PN Statute, the General Council appoints or confirms the Party Leader following the general election held on 30 May.

The statute of the Partit Nazzjonalista stated that, in the event that after an election the party is in Opposition, the Executive must convene the General Council to launch the process for the election of a Leader in accordance with the provisions of the same Statute.

It also states that a General Council must be convened within three months of the official publication of the result of every general election to discuss the electoral result.

The PN Executive decided that this General Council should open on Saturday 20 June and will follow the meetings of the PN Regional Assemblies that will be held in Malta and Gozo throughout next week.

During this General Council, which will be convened on Saturday morning at the PN's Dar Ċentrali, a report on the outcome of these Assemblies, which will discuss the electoral result obtained by the PN, will also be presented to the Councillors of the Partit Nazzjonalista. This report will be presented by the PN President for Political Research, Professor Mary Anne Lauri.

During the Council, speeches will also be delivered by the President of the General Council Mark Anthony Sammut, PN General Secretary Charles Bonello, Deputy Leader Alex Perici Calascione and PN Leader Alex Borg.

The General Council will then entrust the Electoral, Records and Data Commission of the Partit Nazzjonalista with beginning the process for the appointment of the Party Leader.

As also required by the Statute of the Partit Nazzjonalista, the Executive Committee this evening also approved the regulations under which this election will be conducted.
