A 60-year-old woman drowned in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq on Saturday night, police said in a statement on Sunday morning.

Police said that its assistance was required in Triq il-Blat l-Abjad in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq at around 8pm.

There, officers found that the woman, who lived in Swieqi, found herself in difficulty while she was swimming.  People in the vicinity entered the water and brought the woman ashore and administered first aid.

The woman was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance, but she was certified as dead soon after.

Magistrate Joe Mifsud is leading an inquiry, while police investigations are also ongoing.
