An internal inquiry has been launched after Adrian Agius, known as 'Tal-Maksar,' was found in possession of a laptop with internet access while serving a life sentence at the Corradino Correctional Facility.
A spokesperson for the Home Affairs Ministry confirmed that Agius was found with the device during a routine inspection carried out by prison authorities, Maltatoday reported.
According to the Ministry, the laptop was confiscated immediately after it was discovered.
Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield subsequently appointed an internal inquiry, to be led by Judge Antonio Mizzi, after being informed of the incident.
Initial reports by the NET News on Tuesday alleged that the laptop provided Agius with direct internet access, enabling him to use WhatsApp and download material, which was allegedly distributed to other inmates.
It remains unclear how the inmate obtained internet access from within the prison.
Agius is serving a life sentence after he and his brother Robert Agius were found guilty by a jury in 2025 of supplying the bomb used in the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
He was also found guilty in connection with the 2015 murder of lawyer Carmel Chircop.
