PN wants answers on security, fundamental rights in prison

Wednesday, 17 June 2026, 12:01 Last update: about 30 days ago

The latest reports about what is happening at the Corradino Correctional Facility raise serious concerns about security, fundamental rights and the administration of the prison, the Nationalist Party said Wednesday.

On the one hand, the Chamber of Advocates is alleging that meetings between lawyers and their clients may have been recorded. If this is confirmed, it would constitute a serious breach of lawyer-client privilege and of the right to a fair defence, the PN said.

On the other hand, a prisoner serving a life sentence was found to have internet access on his laptop - a fact that raises serious questions about controls and security at the prison.

The PN said it is calling for clear answers to be given on both cases, and for full responsibility to be shouldered by all those who failed in their duties.

The Minister for Home Affairs must give a clear account of what is happening at Corradino Correctional Facility, the PN said.

The prison must be administered in accordance with the law, with effective security and with full respect for everyone's fundamental rights.
