Casual Election to replace Carmelo Abela on Third District on 26 June

The President of the Republic has commissioned the Electoral Commission to hold a casual election in the Third Electoral Division ceded Carmelo Abela. 

Abela resigned as he is set to be appointed Speaker of the House of Representatives on Saturday when Parliament convenes for the first time after the election.

The Writ is being published in today's Government Gazette. The Electoral Commission said that it shall be receiving candidates' nominations for a casual election to elect a Member of the House of Representatives for this electoral division.

Eligible candidates who contested the mentioned electoral division in the 30 May, 2026 General Election and who were not elected may present their nomination form daily from Friday 19 till Tuesday 23 June, 2026, at the Electoral Commission's Office at Ex-Trade Fair Grounds, Naxxar, between 9am and 12pm.  Online applications may be submitted through the website www.electoral.gov.mt as from 9am of Friday 19 June 2026, till 12pm of Tuesday, 23 June, 2026.

Nomination forms may be obtained from the Office of the Electoral Commission in Naxxar.  The Electoral Commission further notifies that the counting of votes of this casual election shall take place as from 9am of Friday, 26 June, 2026.

Labour Party candidates who were not elected in the third district are Ray Abela, Martina Buhagiar, James Grech and Eric Plumpton.
