Contemporary Maltese artist Etienne Farrell presents Unblinking, a multidisciplinary exhibition that explores the eye as symbol, sense, metaphor and witness. Taking place at the historic Church of St Mary Magdalene in Valletta, Unblinking invites audiences into a layered meditation on perception, observation, vulnerability, power and the unseen.

At its core, Unblinking is a mixed-media exhibition featuring sculpture, painting and installation. Bringing together cultural, historical, mythological and emotional perspectives on vision and perception, the exhibition moves between the sharpness of an icy gaze and the blind spots that shape love, belief and decision-making. Referencing ancient symbols, spiritual concepts and contemporary mythologies, Farrell examines vision as both clarity and illusion, vulnerability and control.

Through these interconnected motifs, Unblinking invites visitors to reflect on the eye as an instrument of observation, a mirror of human experience, a means of communication and influence, and a threshold into hidden realities. Enhancing the visitor experience in Unblinking is a subtle performative element developed in collaboration with theatre director Patrick Vella, introducing moments of live interaction that complement the visual works and contribute to the exhibition's immersive atmosphere.

Farrell is widely recognised for creating work that explores social, emotional and cultural narratives through a variety of media. Central to her practice is the active role of the viewer. Rather than positioning audiences as passive observers, her works invite them to participate in the experience, where perception, movement and personal interpretation become integral to the work itself. Each visitor assumes a performative role, contributing to the meaning of the exhibition through their presence and engagement. This relationship between artwork, audience and environment is equally reflected in Farrell's careful choice of exhibition spaces. Highly selective about the venues in which she exhibits, she sought a setting that would resonate with the spiritual and conceptual nature of Unblinking. The deconsecrated Church of St Mary Magdalene provides the ideal backdrop, its architecture and history reinforcing one of the exhibition's central concerns: the tension between what is seen and what remains unseen. The dialogue between the artworks and the church's architecture enhances the exhibition's contemplative nature, allowing the site's historical and spiritual resonance to reinforce the work's conceptual framework.

Transparent materials employed throughout the exhibition further reflect its central themes. The interplay between seeing and unseeing encourages visitors to look through and beyond translucent surfaces, demanding an active and attentive mode of viewing. In this way, perception itself becomes an integral part of the experience, inviting audiences to engage with the work through the very act of seeing.
