The regeneration project of Pjazza tal-Belt Vittoriosa, commonly known as Misraħ ir-Rebħa in Birgu, inaugurated by the Malta Tourism Authority in collaboration with Infrastructure Malta in April, has received significant international recognition through an award at the BIG SEE Makes Sense Awards held in Portoro?, Slovenia.

The project was also granted a Special Mention at the internationally renowned Architizer A+ Awards, further enhancing Malta's reputation for excellence in heritage-led urban regeneration and sustainable tourism development, an MTA statement said Wednesday.

The BIG SEE Festival, widely regarded as one of South-East Europe's foremost platforms for architecture and design, brings together leading architects, urban planners, designers, and cultural stakeholders from across the globe to celebrate projects distinguished by innovation, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity. During the award ceremony in Slovenia, the Birgu regeneration project was recognised as an exemplary model of how historic public spaces can be revitalised while preserving their cultural identity and historical significance.

Situated at the heart of the historic maritime city of Birgu, Misraħ ir-Rebħa has traditionally served as a central meeting place for both residents and visitors. Through this regeneration initiative, the square was transformed into an accessible and pedestrian-oriented public space, while its archaeological and architectural heritage was carefully safeguarded. The project included the installation of new paving, landscaping, lighting, seating areas, and enhanced accessibility features, together with the restoration of key monuments, including the Statue of Saint Lawrence and the historic Victory Monument.

Minister for Tourism, Hon Jo Etienne Abela, said that "this prestigious international recognition is a testament to Malta's vision of placing our cultural heritage at the heart of sustainable tourism development. The regeneration of Misraħ ir-Rebħa in Birgu demonstrates how thoughtful investment in our historic spaces can enhance the quality of life for local communities while enriching the visitor experience. As a Government, we remain committed to preserving our unique heritage, strengthening our historic towns and cities, and ensuring that tourism continues to generate lasting value through projects that respect our identity and showcase Malta's cultural richness to the world."

The project forms part of a wider national vision aimed at strengthening the historic urban fabric of the Three Cities and further enriching Malta's cultural tourism offering. The Malta Tourism Authority worked through close collaboration with Infrastructure Malta, Birgu Local Council and the Ministry for Tourism, with extensive consultation undertaken with the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, residents and local stakeholders throughout the regeneration process.

These international accolades further reinforce Malta's growing reputation for delivering high-quality regeneration projects that successfully combine heritage preservation, urban innovation, and tourism sustainability.
