Malta's sailing community is in mourning following the passing of John Ripard Snr, a visionary sailor and one of the pivotal figures in the history of the Royal Malta Yacht Club. He was 96.
As an Honorary President of the club, Ripard leaves behind a monumental legacy that has defined the nation's sailing heritage for decades.
Ripard's lifelong dedication to the sea began on the world's most prestigious stage when he represented Malta in the Star class at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. His commitment to excellence continued throughout his career, marked by his notable victory in the Middle Sea Race in 1970 aboard his yacht, Tikka. That same year, his outstanding sporting achievements were recognised when he was named Sportsman of the Year.
Beyond his accomplishments on the water, Ripard was a respected authority within the sport, serving on the judging panel for the Admiral's Cup and continuing to compete well into his later years, including an appearance at the 1995 Mediterranean Games. His contributions were honored with the Midalja Qadi Tar-Repubblika in 1992, and in 2005, he was formally inducted into the Maltese Olympic Committee Hall of Fame.
The Royal Malta Yacht Club described Ripard as a leader whose passion and generous spirit inspired generations of sailors.
