A 15-year-old boy from Pakistan, who resided in Xgħajra, tragically lost his life yesterday after getting into difficulty while swimming, the police said Sunday.
The accident occurred late yesterday afternoon, with police being alerted to the need for assistance at the Xgħajra slipway area at approximately 4:45 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers and a medical team from Mater Dei Hospital found the teenager unconscious. Bystanders at the scene had managed to pull the boy from the water and were attempting to provide first aid before the authorities arrived.
The victim was rushed to the hospital by ambulance for urgent medical attention. Despite the efforts of the medical team, he was sadly pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. He was later identified as altar boy Nadab John.
The Franciscan Friars of the Church of Ta' Ġieżu in Valletta paid tribute to his memory, saying that he had wanted to serve at the altar so that he could be closer to Jesus.
Magistrate Dr. Monica Borg Galea LL.D was informed of the case and has initiated an inquiry. Police investigations are ongoing.
