The national Genitourinary (GU) Clinic recorded 557 new sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases to Malta's Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Unit (IDCU) during the first six months of 2026, according to information tabled in Parliament.

The figures were published in response to a Parliamentary Question by Opposition MP Ian Vassallo, who asked the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health how many STI cases had been diagnosed as new cases at the GU Clinic.

Replying on behalf of the government, Health Minister Ian Borg said the IDCU had been notified of 557 STI cases between January and June 2026 by the GU Clinic.

The latest data follows concerns raised last year after another Parliamentary Question revealed that more than 1,800 STI cases were reported during 2024.

Sexually transmitted infections include conditions such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and genital herpes.
