Leader of the Opposition and Partit Nazzjonalista Alex Borg has written to the Chairperson of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), requesting that an urgent meeting of the Council be convened to discuss the national electricity supply crisis facing the country, the PN said Friday.

In his request, Alex Borg stated that the repeated and prolonged power cuts affecting Malta and Gozo over recent weeks can no longer be regarded as isolated incidents, but as a national challenge having a serious impact on families, workers, the self-employed, businesses and the economy as a whole.

The Opposition Leader stressed that thousands of families and businesses have suffered substantial financial losses due to damage to appliances and equipment, the loss of food and other products, as well as the serious difficulties caused to vulnerable people and those who rely on electrically powered medical equipment.

Alex Borg called on the MCESD to discuss, without further delay, the resilience and capacity of the national electricity infrastructure, the immediate measures required to ensure a stable service, the economic impact of the crisis on families and businesses, support and compensation mechanisms for those who have suffered losses, as well as the long-term investment plan required to provide Malta with modern infrastructure that is adequate for the country's needs.

The PN said it believes that, in the face of a crisis of this scale, the country should seek unity and bring all social partners around the same table to jointly identify the necessary solutions. It is therefore calling for the MCESD meeting to be held at the earliest possible opportunity.

The PN reiterates that it is ready to contribute in a constructive and responsible manner so that the country has an electricity infrastructure that is reliable, resilient and capable of meeting both present and future needs.
