The Minister for the Arts, Culture and National Heritage, Dr Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, and the Board of Directors of Heritage Malta have appointed the Executive Board of the Malta Biennale Foundation; this board will spearhead preparations for the upcoming third edition of this international contemporary art festival. The next edition of the Malta Biennale will take place between March and May 2028 at Heritage Malta's historic sites and museums.
The Executive Board will be chaired by Mario Cutajar, with Noel Zammit, Kenneth Gambin, and Pierre Bonello serving as board members.
The Malta Biennale Foundation was officially established through a notarial deed signed at MUŻA last May, coinciding with the closing of the Malta Biennale 2026. This development follows the government's decision in March of the same year to create the Foundation with the aim of strengthening the Biennale, which has garnered international success during its first two editions. The Malta Biennale Foundation now forms an integral part of Heritage Malta.
Meanwhile, the Foundation's leadership team has also been appointed: Anthony Gatt will serve as General Director, while Melanie Erixon and Michelle Delceppo will act as Director of Operations and Administration Manager, respectively. Preparations for the third edition of the Malta Biennale, scheduled to take place between March and May 2028, are currently underway. The first international calls, including the call for the next edition's Artistic Director, will be issued in the coming weeks.
Since its inception in 2024, the Malta Biennale has attracted significant international attention across its two editions. It has received thousands of artistic proposals from numerous countries for participation in the exhibitions, alongside extensive coverage from international newspapers and magazines, which have highlighted Malta as a prime destination during the event. The first two editions of the Malta Biennale were held under the patronage of the President of Malta and UNESCO. Notably, the Malta Biennale is the only biennale in the world to have been granted UNESCO patronage.
