Malta's central government debt stood at €11.7 billion at the end of July, an increase of €540.3 million compared to the same month last year, figures published by the National Statistics Office (NSO) show.
In a statement, the NSO said central government debt totalled €11,702.7 million as at the end of July 2026.
Meanwhile, the government's Consolidated Fund registered a deficit of €552.2 million during the first seven months of the year.
Recurrent revenue increased by €717.3 million compared to the corresponding period in 2025, while total expenditure rose by €751.6 million, NSO said.
The increase in expenditure therefore outweighed the rise in recurrent revenue, resulting in a negative change of €34.2 million in the government's Consolidated Fund.
Income tax recorded the largest increase on the revenue side, at €362.8 million.
Meanwhile, Programmes and Initiatives registered the largest increase among expenditure categories, growing by €272.4 million.
