Contemporary art space axis_ will open its second exhibition, What Moves Between Us, on Thursday 3 September, bringing together works by 12 artists exploring the relationships that shape how people understand themselves, each other and the world around them.
Curated by axis_ artistic director Elyse Tonna, the exhibition will feature artists Kamy Aquilina, Sarah Bonaci, Maria Borg, Giola Cassar, Martina Darmanin, Yana Fenech, Nina Gerada, Ġulja Holland, Tina Mifsud, Lucia Seifert, Rasha Belle Zammit Cutajar and Jade Zammit.
Running until 15 November, the exhibition presents both new and existing works spanning painting, photography, cyanotype, print, textiles and ceramics.
What Moves Between Us explores the idea that identity is not formed in isolation. Experiences of people, places and histories are carried with us, whether consciously or in ways that only become apparent over time.
The works consider themes including memory, intimacy, care, desire and absence, while also examining relationships with landscapes, plants and other species.
The exhibition is structured around three broad points of departure: Beyond Ourselves, What We Carry and Where We Meet. These themes examine what exists beyond the individual, what remains with us and what emerges through encounters with others.
According to the exhibition's curatorial concept, the boundaries between these themes are deliberately fluid. What people inherit can influence the relationships they form, while encounters can become experiences that are carried forward and the environments surrounding them can shape their understanding of themselves.
The exhibition follows Nothing is Clear, axis_'s inaugural exhibition, and forms part of the development of the space's wider artistic programme.
Located at The Butler's House, adjacent to Villa Bologna in Attard, axis_ is a contemporary art space presenting exhibitions, artistic commissions, public programmes and learning initiatives. Its programme brings together established and emerging artistic practices, with a focus on creating sustained opportunities for artists and encouraging dialogue between contemporary art and different audiences and fields of knowledge.
A public programme will accompany the exhibition, including a children's workshop on Saturday 26 September and a curatorial tour on Wednesday 14 October. Further events will be announced during the exhibition period.
What Moves Between Us will open to the public at 7.30pm on Thursday 3 September at axis_, The Butler's House, Attard. Admission is free. The exhibition will remain open until Sunday 15 November, when it will conclude with a finissage.
