Museums by Candlelight returns to Rabat and Mdina on Saturday, 19th September, for the final edition of this year's series, inviting visitors to experience three fascinating historic sites in a magical after-dark setting.
From 7:00 p.m. onwards, with last admission at midnight, visitors will be able to explore Domvs Romana, St Paul's Catacombs, and the National Museum of Natural History for just €3. Illuminated by the gentle glow of thousands of candles, the three sites will offer a more intimate, immersive experience, made even more special with live music and entertainment throughout the evening.
At Domvs Romana, visitors can discover how a Roman aristocratic family lived nearly 2,000 years ago. While little of the original townhouse remains, its exquisite mosaics - including the famous 'Drinking Doves' at the heart of the peristyle - and intricate artefacts testify to the opulent lifestyles of its former residents. These treasures are housed within Malta's very first purpose-built archaeological museum, which was opened in 1882 and is instantly recognisable by its colonnaded portico at the entrance. Harpist Laetitia and violinist Stephen Scerri will enhance the atmosphere with their music, from 8 to 11pm.
At St Paul's Catacombs, a short walk away, visitors can descend into Pluto's underworld domain. Located right outside ancient Melite, the catacombs are Malta's largest complex of underground Roman cemeteries, showcasing burial practices and religious traditions spanning the Punic, Roman, and Byzantine eras. Reflecting this broad cultural value, the site recently became the first Maltese site to earn the prestigious European Heritage Label. Local Maltese band Skald will enliven its unique spaces from 8 to 11pm.
At the National Museum of Natural History, housed within the magnificent 18th-century Vilhena Palace in Mdina, visitors can encounter specimens that span millions of years of natural history - from a mummified Nile crocodile to a fossilised crocodilian head discovered in Gozo and a tooth of the extinct giant white shark. Kathy the Violinist will provide live musical accompaniment for the entire night.
The event will also coincide with Rabat Sacrum, organised by the Rabat Local Council from 6pm. onwards, adding more spots to visit during this night of exploration. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and footwear, as the evening involves walking between and within sites.
