The hidden threat: Hexane in our food and its impact on health

In the modern food industry, few consumers are aware of the hidden chemicals lurking in everyday products. One such substance, hexane, is widely used but remains largely unrecognised by the general public. Derived from crude oil, hexane is a volatile solvent employed in food processing, particularly in extracting vegetable oils from crops like soybeans, sunflower seeds, and corn. While its efficiency in production is undeniable, concerns over potential health risks have sparked debates about its continued use. This article explores the sources of hexane in food, its presence in the human body, and the possible long-term health effects.

 

What is hexane?

Hexane is a hydrocarbon solvent classified as an industrial chemical. It is colourless, highly flammable, and has a characteristic odour similar to gasoline. Primarily used in industrial settings, hexane is employed in the manufacturing of glues, adhesives, leather products, and cleaning solutions. However, its most controversial application is in the food industry, where it plays a crucial role in the extraction of oils from seeds and grains.

The process involves immersing crushed seeds in hexane to dissolve the oil, which is later separated and refined for consumption. This method allows producers to extract nearly all the available oil, making it far more efficient than traditional cold-pressing techniques. However, despite stringent regulations, traces of hexane may remain in the final food product, raising concerns about long-term exposure.

 

Sources of hexane in food

Hexane contamination is most commonly associated with:

Vegetable oils - The vast majority of commercial vegetable oils, including soybean, corn, sunflower, and canola oil, are extracted using hexane. While refining removes most residues, trace amounts can still be found in the final product.

Processed foods - Many packaged foods contain hexane-derived oils, including salad dressings, margarine, and snack foods such as chips and crackers.

Protein isolates and meal replacements - Plant-based protein powders, such as soy protein isolate, are often processed with hexane. These products are widely consumed by athletes, vegetarians, and those seeking high-protein diets, raising concerns about cumulative exposure.

Infant formula - Some baby formulas, particularly those based on soy, contain oils or protein isolates extracted with hexane. Infants are especially vulnerable to chemical exposure due to their developing bodies and immature detoxification systems.

Fast food and fried products - Many fast food chains use vegetable oils in deep-frying, some of which may contain hexane residues. Repeated exposure through fried foods increases the risk of ingesting this solvent over time.

 

Health effects of hexane exposure

The toxicity of hexane has been well documented in industrial settings, where workers exposed to high concentrations suffer from neurological disorders. The effects of chronic low-dose exposure from food remain less clear, but potential risks include:

Neurological damage - Prolonged exposure to hexane has been linked to nerve damage, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, numbness, and tingling in the extremities. In severe cases, it can cause irreversible nerve degeneration, a condition known as peripheral neuropathy.

Liver and kidney damage - Since hexane is metabolised by the liver, long-term exposure may lead to liver stress, impaired detoxification, and potential damage. The kidneys, responsible for excreting toxins, may also suffer under prolonged exposure.

Respiratory issues - Inhalation of hexane fumes in industrial settings has been associated with lung irritation and breathing difficulties. While ingestion through food occurs at much lower levels, the potential for cumulative toxicity remains a concern.

Reproductive health concerns - Some studies suggest that hexane exposure may interfere with reproductive health, potentially affecting fertility and foetal development. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should be particularly cautious about their exposure to food products containing hexane residues.

Carcinogenic potential - While there is no definitive evidence that hexane is a direct carcinogen, its classification as a hazardous air pollutant and neurotoxin raises concerns about long-term health risks. Some experts argue that chronic exposure to industrial solvents may increase the risk of certain cancers.

 

Regulation and industry response

Government agencies such as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) regulate hexane levels in food, ensuring that residues remain within supposedly safe limits. However, critics argue that the long-term effects of repeated low-dose exposure have not been thoroughly studied. Moreover, the lack of mandatory labelling means consumers often remain unaware of its presence in their food.

Some companies have responded to public concern by adopting alternative extraction methods, such as cold-pressing or mechanical expelling. Organic food certifications typically prohibit the use of hexane, making organic oils and protein products a safer option for those looking to avoid exposure.

 

How to reduce hexane intake

While complete avoidance may be difficult, consumers can take several steps to minimise their exposure to hexane in food:

Choose cold-pressed or expeller-pressed oils - Look for oils labelled "cold-pressed" or "expeller-pressed" as these are extracted without the use of chemical solvents.

Opt for organic products - Organic certification standards prohibit the use of hexane in food processing, making organic oils, protein powders, and infant formulas a safer choice.

Limit processed foods - Since many processed foods contain hexane-derived ingredients, reducing reliance on packaged snacks and meals can lower exposure.

Cook at home with whole ingredients - Preparing meals from scratch using unprocessed ingredients minimises the likelihood of ingesting hexane residues.

Check labels and research brands - Some brands specifically avoid hexane in their production processes. Researching companies and choosing cleaner alternatives can make a significant difference.

Hexane is a hidden yet pervasive contaminant in the modern food supply. While regulatory agencies maintain that trace amounts pose minimal risk, the potential for long-term health effects remains a concern. By making informed choices about the foods we consume, opting for organic or mechanically processed alternatives, and advocating for greater transparency in food labelling, consumers can take steps to protect their health. As awareness grows, pressure on the food industry to adopt safer extraction methods may ultimately lead to a shift away from hexane use in food production, benefiting both human health and the environment.
