Power cuts affected a myriad of localities across Malta and Gozo after an interruption in energy generation at the Delimara LNG plant on Wednesday evening.
Enemalta reported that there were over 30 localities which were affected by the power cuts at around 6pm.
Qormi, Żebbuġ, Żabbar, Żejtun, Rabat (Gozo), Attard, Balzan, Birkirkara, Birżebbuġa, Fontana, Għajnsielem, Għarb, Għasri, Għaxaq, Ħamrun, Iklin, Marsa, Marsascala, Marsaxlokk, Mellieħa, Msida, Munxar, Nadur, Qala, San Ġwann, St Paul's Bay, Sannat, Swieqi, Xagħra, Xewkija, Żebbuġ (Gozo), Fgura, Santa Venera, Sliema, Valletta, and Floriana were all affected by the outages.
In many places, the outage lasted for around 15 minutes before power was restored.
Enemalta said on social media that the interruption was at an LNG plant and resulted in the loss of around 200 megawatts of electricity generation.
“The sudden drop in generation required temporary supply interruptions in a number of areas to protect the stability of the wider electricity system while emergency generation was brought online,” Enemalta said.
“Emergency plants are now operating and power is being restored progressively. Enemalta is working to restore normal supply as quickly and safely as possible,” the company said.
Enemalta said that the exact cause of the generation interruption is still being established.
