Works on Fond Għadir in Sliema nearing completion

Thursday, 10 September 2026, 15:30 Last update: about 21 days ago

The works on the wall at Fond Għadir are in their final stages, which will give a more complete look to the wall along the Sliema coast while continuing to strengthen the promenade and provide better protection against strong seas, the Ministry for Local Government and Public Works said in a statement.

The intervention, done by the Department of Public Works, was carried out after there was a danger in this area from protruding and unstable rocks, as well as another wall that was in a very poor condition. Through these works, this danger to the public has been addressed, the Ministry said, while the promenade has been strengthened to be more protected from the effects of erosion caused by waves.

This was announced during a visit that the Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli made to Fond Għadir together with the Director General of the Works Division within the Department of Public Works, Architect Stephen Bonello, and Mayor of Sliema John Pillow. During the visit, the work carried out and the final works that remain to be completed for the project were discussed.

Zerafa Civelli said that this intervention is another example of the work being done to make public infrastructure safer, more resilient and better serve communities.

“We are continuing to invest in infrastructure that provides greater security and peace of mind to the public, while protecting and strengthening the public spaces that are used daily by families and residents,” the Minister said.

The Minister stressed that the government will continue to prioritise the maintenance and strengthening of infrastructure across Malta and Gozo, with ongoing work to ensure that important public spaces are safe and continue to offer a quality environment to communities.

Bonello explained that the intervention involved preparatory and structural work, including the preparation of the foundations for the construction of the wall, in order to strengthen the stability of the infrastructure.

Architect Mark Camilleri explained that the project is now in the final phase of implementation, with the contractor carrying out the final finishing works.

Pillow thanked the Ministry and the Department of Public Works for the work carried out in this area, while emphasising the importance of interventions that continue to improve the safety and quality of public spaces for the community.

The project was carried out with an investment of €165,877 and involved interventions on the existing infrastructure, including the excavation of unstable rock, the construction of foundations and the construction of the wall. Currently, the contractor is completing the final finishing works, including the placement of concrete on part of the wall, before the project is completely closed. Once these final interventions are completed, this part of the promenade will be safer and stronger, with better protection against the power of the sea and the effects of erosion.
