CPD warns public of rough seas and changing weather conditions

The Civil Protection Department (CPD) has warned the public not to underestimate the dangers posed by rough seas, strong currents and rapidly changing weather conditions, following four separate drowning incidents around the Maltese islands on Wednesday involving five people.

Thankfully, none of the incidents resulted in a fatality.

Medical teams from Mater Dei Hospital's Emergency Department responded to the emergencies, with assistance from the CPD where required. Members of the public also provided valuable assistance in some instances.

The CPD said Wednesday's incidents should serve as a clear warning of how quickly sea conditions can become dangerous, particularly as weather conditions begin to change.

It also highlighted the risks faced by visitors to Malta who may be unfamiliar with the local coastline, sea conditions and the power of the Mediterranean Sea.

The department urged the public to check weather and sea conditions before entering the water and to avoid swimming when the sea is rough or conditions are deteriorating.

People should also never underestimate waves, currents or the distance back to shore, while warning flags, signs and instructions from lifeguards or authorities should always be followed.

The CPD stressed the importance of keeping children under constant supervision when near the sea.

Anyone who sees a person in difficulty in the water should call 112 immediately. The CPD warned against attempting a rescue if doing so could put the rescuer or others at risk.

While Wednesday's incidents ended without loss of life, the department said they should serve as a serious reminder of the need to respect the sea, know one's limits and avoid unnecessary risks.

It stressed that people's actions should not endanger their own lives or the lives of those who may have to come to their assistance.
