A 34-year-old man from Ghana is due to be charged in court on Friday in connection with the death of 47-year-old Miriam Azzopardi, who was found dead in a field in Marsa last Wednesday.

The man is expected to appear before Magistrate Astrid May Grima at around 12.30pm, where he will be charged with the femicide of Azzopardi, among other charges.

Azzopardi was found under trees in a field beside Triq is-Salib tal-Marsa at around 10.20am on Wednesday after a member of the public spotted her body and alerted police officers who were patrolling nearby.

The 47-year-old was later identified as Miriam Azzopardi, a Maltese national who lived in St Paul's Bay.

An autopsy found marks on Azzopardi's neck, indicating that she had been strangled by hand. She was also allegedly killed at the same spot she was found, but 12 hours prior.

Police arrested the 34-year-old Ghanaian man in Marsa on Wednesday evening following investigations into the woman's death.
