Number of tourists up by nearly 15% in August - NSO

Total inbound tourists August 2026 were estimated at 539,655, an increase of 14.7 per cent when compared to the corresponding month in 2025, the NSO said Friday.

During the month under review, a total of 515,676 inbound tourists visited Malta for holiday purposes, and 10,484 tourists came for business purposes. The largest share of inbound tourists consisted of persons aged between 25 and 44 (36.6 per cent), followed by the 0-24 age bracket (34.7 per cent). British, Italian and Polish residents made up 46.5 per cent of total inbound tourists.

Total nights spent went up by 9.9 per cent when compared to August 2025, reaching 3.8 million nights. The largest share of guest nights (86.7 per cent) was spent in rented accommodation establishments. The average length of stay of total inbound tourists stood at 7.0 nights.

Total tourist expenditure stood at €629.3 million, an increase of 14.9 per cent over the corresponding month in 2025 (Table 3). The average expenditure per night was estimated at €165.5.

The number of tourists visiting Gozo and Comino, including both same-day and overnight visitors, totalled 356,101, or 66.0 per cent of total tourists.

January-August 2026

Inbound tourists for the first eight months of 2026 amounted to 3,160,974, an increase of 17.9 per cent over the same period in 2025. Total nights spent by inbound tourists went up by 10.9 per cent, reaching 18.7 million nights.

Total tourist expenditure was estimated at €2,963.3 million, 15.6 per cent higher than that recorded for the same period in 2025. Total expenditure per capita decreased to €937 from €956 in 2025.

The number of tourists visiting Gozo and Comino, including both same-day and overnight visitors, totalled 1,794,381, or 56.8 per cent of total tourists.
