The Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) has called for a united national effort to combat drugs and organised crime, stressing that the government's commitment must be followed by concrete action, measurable results and a review of existing drug policies.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the council expressed its support for Home Affairs and Security Minister Glenn Bedingfield's commitment to intensify the fight against drugs, drug trafficking and the criminal networks responsible for their distribution.
MCESD said drug trafficking and organised criminal activity posed a serious threat to Maltese society, particularly families, young people and local communities. It added that these activities also undermine legitimate businesses, affect the economy and weaken the country's social fabric.
While welcoming Bedingfield's stated commitment, the council emphasised that declarations of intent were not enough and that the effectiveness of existing drug policies must also be reviewed.
MCESD said tackling these challenges required a coordinated approach and the collective commitment of all sectors of society, calling on political parties, social organisations, sports associations, local councils, non-governmental organisations and community groups to unite behind the effort.
The council stressed that the fight against drugs should rise above political differences and individual interests, describing the protection of society as a shared responsibility.
It also expressed its appreciation and solidarity with the Malta Police Force, the Armed Forces of Malta, the Civil Protection Department, hospital emergency services and other frontline personnel working to protect lives, maintain public safety and safeguard communities.
Through its constituent organisations, which represent employers, workers and civil society, MCESD reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at making Malta safer and more resilient.
The council concluded that combating drugs and organised crime required collective responsibility, sustained cooperation and determination, insisting that Malta must speak with one voice and act decisively.
