Green Paper on fibre technology launched

Malta Independent Monday, 28 July 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

Communications Minister Austin Gatt yesterday launched a Green Paper to open a discussion on the future of fibre technology in Malta.

During a press conference, Dr Gatt said the document is a collection of ideas on where Malta should be heading in the field of connectivity.

Fibre optics connectivity is the way forward – the technology has no limits, said the minister.

“If Malta is aiming to be one of the top 10 countries of internet users, then fibre connectivity is the only way forward,” he said.

Dr Gatt said the present quality of broadband has to be much higher to allow the country to make the leap forward in quality and technology.

He went on to say that not only Malta is facing this challenge but added that even large countries such as Germany are looking into the field of fibre technology.

Improving the technology in households and schools depends on heavy investment in this area, said Dr Gatt.

“If Malta wants to continue attracting more foreign investment, then we have to continue investing heavily in the newest technology,” he said.

Feedback on the Green Paper can be sent on [email protected] by Thursday 30 September.
