Malta Sitting on the divorce fence – AD

Malta Independent Monday, 28 July 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

Alternattiva Demokratika said the government decided to sit on the fence in recent EU discussions concerning divorce, while the prime minister had promised a vague discussion on the issue.

Party chairman Arnold Cassola argued that the government should stop waffling and being inconsistent as Justice and Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici seemed to be in Brussels when enhanced-cooperation on divorce was discussed.

Prof. Cassola said AD has always been clear on the subject and it believed that adults should be treated as such and should be able to divorce if they wish so. He accused the Nationalist Party of being in a state of confusion on the issue, “with different branches of the party and government ministers contradicting each other”.

He added that the Malta Labour Party had the power of proposing a divorce bill in parliament rather than sitting on the fence until elected in government. He promised that “AD would support any such move.”
