Jesuit Centre welcomes policy paper on migrant workers

Malta Independent Friday, 19 September 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice expressed its support for the policy paper on migrant workers which the General Workers Union presented to the press a few days ago.

The paper rightly points out that irregular immigration is a very worrying problem for Malta. It is clear, however, that this can never serve as an excuse for tolerating cheap labour and exploitation. The Centre for Faith and Justice reiterates that work gives dignity to a person and that all workers, migrants and Maltese alike, have the right to receive a just wage and to work in safe conditions.

Through legal work, a relationship is established between Maltese and migrant workers, who can thus contribute to the country’s economic welfare. In the light of the Social Teachings of the Church, the Centre for Faith and Justice endorses this initiative and considers it a positive step in fostering solidarity among workers and upholding their collective rights. It also shares the aim of promoting a positive mentality in Maltese society so as to ensure that the dignity and the rights of all workers, whosoever they are, are respected by everyone.

It is hoped that similar initiatives may empower migrants to seek their rights and to overcome any form of exploitation, a practice which remains always unacceptable. The centre is willing to continue offering its contribution to this discussion, while calling for a wider discussion on integration policies in other areas such as health and education.
